Book Blurb

She thinks she’s fooled me. But I’ve known all along.

Almost.

Lily is hiding something, a secret so big, she came out of a year-long coma and her first instinct was to lie.

Who does that? Someone who is afraid. No—not afraid.

Terrified. And it’s my job to take that fear away.

My partner and I have spent countless man-hours hunting down the cold-blooded killer who did this to her. Meanwhile, Lily’s spent her waking hours recovering. Getting stronger. Getting smarter.

Staying beautiful.

Never get involved emotionally. That’s my dictate. Never get attached.

When you realize you’re caught in a triangle, it turns out there is no exit.

Crossing a line is easy. Holding a line takes strength.

Lily’s shooter knows that she’s my weakness.

One I have to get back.

No matter what it takes.

My Thoughts <3

I have been sooo READY for this book to be released. The first one definitely set the stage for what was going to be an amazing trilogy and I am not the most patient person ever! 🙂

This book is entirely in Duff’s POV. And wow, we knew that there was a LOT that he hid about himself during the first book, but I had no freaking clue until reading this one.

He is an extremely interesting character and had been through SO much. He is a great guy, completely loyal. but also not wanting to hurt anyone- especially Lily.

We dive deeper into this story and GEEZ is it so freaking insane. I usually am not a fan of the 2nd book in a series because it typically is just setting up the 3rd book. This definitely did too, but it had its own twists and turns that absolutely captivated me. I am SO ready for the last book and cannot wait for January. Thank you Meli Raine for releasing these so close to each other, my crazy nerves thank you!!!

READ THIS SERIES!!!!

PS: I received an ARC of this book for free in return for my honest feedback.

Excerpt 1

If unicorns had a flavor, it would taste like kissing Lily.

Her essence is still on the tip of my tongue as I watch the layered response Lily has mastered. Observe her as that beautiful mind works to line all the pieces up and execute the subterfuge, living in two selves, one ever vigilant, one struggling to stay quiet.

For months now, I’ve felt it. Sensed it.

Now I can taste it, too. Lies have a flavor.

And God help me, I want more of the deliciousness of Lily.

But those lies come with an aftertaste, a bitter acrimony that has an overriding power.

My own words ring in the air like a gong as I wait: When were you going to tell me you’ve been faking the amnesia, Lily? Before or after I sleep with you?

“Sleep with me?” she squeaks, the words catching me off guard. I assumed she’d deny the lying.

Not talk about my fantasies.

“You want to talk about that?” I choke out, amused and sickened. “You’ve been lying to me for close to a year and all you want to talk about is sleeping with me?”

“You brought it up!”

She’s got me there.

“How about this fake amnesia bullshit, Lily? How about we talk about that before we discuss getting sweet between the sheets?”

She blushes.

I get hard.

This—this is why I should have recused myself from this damned assignment long ago. I knew this day would come. I knew I’d have to call her on the lying.

Worse than that—I knew I wouldn’t be able to help myself.

Excerpt 2

“How can you stand there in front of me after kissing me like that and tell me everything will be okay when you know there’s no way out?”

“If I thought there was no way out, Lily, I wouldn’t be here.”

“And if I thought there was a way out, Duff, I wouldn’t be here, either.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means, hypothetically,” she says slowly, “that you’re asking me to give you information I don’t have.”

The tipping point happened.

I lost.

She’s gone over the edge. Or maybe I’m the one who’s gone over the edge. There’s no backtracking here. But I’m planting seeds, and seeds, when exposed to sunlight, eventually have to grow.

“Lily, you don’t have to tell me anything.”

“I know.”

“But if you did, if you were going to give me one shred of information, I would ask this: Is the person who tried to kill you standing in this stairwell with you?”

I just handed her my heart. Pulled it straight out of my chest and held it up, waiting for her to take it.

Excerpt 3

I’ve always been able to identify with Lily and her wounds to understand her healing process, to grasp the subtle and not-so-subtle psychological developments that help her to reconstruct a self. What I didn’t feel enough, though, was empathy.

Putting yourself in another person’s shoes isn’t just about imagining the body. We can create little movies inside our minds as mirror neurons give us the ability to imagine ourselves in someone else’s place.

Going deep emotionally, though, is a skill set you can’t develop. The building blocks have to be inherently in place. It’s like fast-twitch muscles that allow athletes to go from great to Olympic level. You have it or you don’t. And if you don’t, you’ll never develop it.

If you do, it’s up to you to find a way to optimize it.

As we sit here eating, I focus on the food. Never underestimate the power of macronutrients in reestablishing stability and empathy, though there’s no perfect ratio of protein to carbs to fats to give yourself an edge in that department.

I’m sitting here at the table, feeling all these feelings, when Lily taps my hand. She’s freshly showered, her hair hanging in loose, wet waves around her face. Soaked through, the strands of her hair hang longer than they do when dry, giving her an even more wholesome look.

And covering the scar in the back of her skull.

She smiles at me. “You’re a million miles away.”

“No, ma’am,” I tell her. “I’m right here, present and on duty.”

“Must have a nice job if duty involves raclette.” She looks at the hot stone in front of us with melted cheese and an assortment of meats and other foods.

I have to laugh. “It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.”
